James Otis Purdy ( – ) was an American novelist, short-story writer, poet, and playwright who, from his debut in 1956, published over a dozen novels, and many collections of poetry, short stories, and plays.

Grandfather Purdy followed the occupation of a farmer, and in 1850 came to Illinois, where he entered land. The Purdy family is of Puritan stock, the ancestors settling in New England at an early date, and were prominent in the early history of the colonists.

As "Charles in Charge," he has also been a regular guest of KFOG Radio's Morning Show, in San Francisco, California. Purdy has worked as a writer and editor for Macworld magazine, Yahoo!, and Monster.com. He is now a founding partner of the creative agency Moxy Creative. [3]
