Folsom’s beloved icerink encircles the historic railroad turntable and a tall, decorated Christmas tree. The FolsomIceRink is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., including Christmas Day.
The icerinkin operation, on a Monday afternoon. Here is a side view from outside the rink. The ice looked about five inches thick, but some of that is probably a layer of styrofoam insulation. The ice has to be thick enough to support a small Zamboni, one of those ice-smoothing tractors.
The infamous icerink within the Grand Palais has a relatively short shelf life—it’s open from December 13 to January 7—but the late-night sessions really make the most of the season with nighttime skates beneath the illuminated dome open until 2 a.m. Vienna Ice World in Vienna, Austria.
