To help biologists collect and evaluate data and fine-tune management recommendations Maine is divided into 29 Wildlife Management Districts (WMDs). Wildlife Management Districts are delineated, geographical sections of the State that have similarities in biological and geophysical characteristics.
As a result of that effort, Maine was divided into 30 parcels, and the term Wildlife Management Districts (WMDs) was born. Some of the boundaries of the Wildlife Management Districts were changed in 2006. There are now only 29 districts.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife manages 69 Wildlife Management Areas (WMA’s) across the state. State owned WMA’s provide land holdings for the protection and enhancement of important wildlife habitats that also provide opportunities for all types of public recreation.
