EconomicsJobMarketRumors, also known as EJMR, is an anonymous internet discussion board that caters to academiceconomists and job seekers. It has been the subject of several journalistic articles, and has been heavily criticised by academics, due to its reputation for racist and misogynistic discussions as well as personal attacks. [1][2]
We analyze the content of the anonymous online discussion forum EconomicsJobMarketRumors (EJMR) and document its evolving interactions with external information sources.
· Policy discussions around online anonymity have intensified in academic and professional communities. While anonymity facilitates free expression, it also liberates offensive conduct. This column identifies links between the EconomicsJobMarketRumors forum and patterns of user behaviour.
In this paper, we identify the scheme used to assign usernames for each post written by an anonymous user on EJMR. We show how the statistical properties of that algorithm do not anonymize posts, but instead allows the IP address from which each post was made to be determined with high probability.
