The SeattlePoliceDepartment incident report stated that Cobain was found with a Remington Model 11 20-gauge shotgun across his body and had suffered a visible gunshot wound to the head; a suicide note had been discovered nearby.

It has been my experience from working Cold Case Homicides for 10 years that certain evidence deteriorates over time, especially after 20 years. As a homicide detective I have an obligation to preserve evidence that I believe may lose its value due to decay.
